Webb & Brown-Neaves’ display home, The Cabin, is a contemporary beach cabin that challenges the coastal design norm by moving away from the traditional elements of coastal homes. As a unique coastal home, its presence in the location stands out with its unique colour palette and unconventional materials.
We spoke to WB Interior Design Consultant Melissa Redwood about her inspiration behind the interior design of The Cabin and how she has styled the home to create a subtle coastal feel while still reimagining coastal design.
“The paint colours throughout are soft greys and whites, creating a sense of lightness in the home, and the use of greenery gives the home a warm and lived-in feel about it.”
The Cabin is a home that stands out in the street, creating a distinctive contrast in a coastal environment. This was a major factor in Melissa’s inspiration for the interior design of the home.
“As well as using ‘traditional’ coastal colours, the home also features plenty of darker colours,” she said. “I’ve used a dark grey tile in the bathrooms and added charcoals through the kitchen splashback and some of the furniture. This creates impact through a lovely contrast in the colour palette.”
“The kitchen features a dark, midnight blue, mosaic tile. This creates a really striking contrast with the white cabinetry doors.”
Located in Peet’s Display village in the coastal suburb of Burns Beach, the design of the home is well suited to its location, while still challenging what would usually be expected of a home in such an area.
“Burns Beach is a popular coastal destination in Perth. It made sense for the home to have a coastal feel about it in both the interior and exterior,” Melissa said.
“Coastal interiors have a bright and calming colour scheme, creating a fresh, casual and relaxed feel throughout the home. The idea with The Cabin was to create that serene and tranquil setting while still challenging the typical monochromatic greys we see so often in coastal homes.”
One of the heroes of the home is the master bedroom upstairs. Overlooking the panoramic bushland view in front of the home and featuring raking ceilings, the room is a spacious, relaxed area in the home.
The home is also perfect for entertaining. Whether it’s a large gathering or a small catch-up, The Cabin’s kitchen accommodates for hosting any sort of event.
“The kitchen is the perfect place for entertaining friends or having a large family gathering, featuring a huge island bench and plenty of storage,” Melissa said. “Running of the kitchen is a separate scullery and utility area, which features a large servery window, creating both a perfect little bar area and a great place to serve food and drinks through into the alfresco area.”
